After several months of hard work, the Lugano Yacht Club Team has succeeded in organizing what even the America's Cup did not achieve. During the first edition of the RC44 Lugano Yacht Club Cup, Paul Cayard (five America's Cup, two world tours, one Olympic Game, ...), godfather of the Lugano Yacht Club, will challenge Russell Coutts, winner of three straight America's Cup. The LYC's huge organization effort will bring a very special event to Lugano: a Match Race exhibition between two of the most important sailmen in the world. To make a comparison with tennis, it would be as if Federer and Nadal were playing a match in Lugano.
The two champions will challenge each other on RC44s, the boats designed by Russell Coutts to offer a spectacular performance. Russell Coutts and Paul Cayard know the Lake Ceresio and its winds, in fact they have both already been in Lugano as guest of the LYC and participants of the Gran Premio Città di Lugano Match Race (Cayard in 2005 and Coutts in 2006). This demonstrative event will be part of the first edition of the RC44 Lugano Yacht Club Cup, sailing event organised by the LYC on demand of the “Kiwi” champion who was enthusiastic of the organization ability showed by the LYC in the past editions.
It is the love for this sport, which apart from some extremely rare cases has never been touched by any dishonest behaviour, that motivates the work of the young LYC’s members. From those spurs arises the activity of the LYC, that is able to bring the world’s best sailmen to Lugano. “Make sailing public” has always been the slogan of the LYC, that wants to bring this sport to the public and, in particular, to let the young people know the world of sailing.
